Mitchell Chairs Board

Carter and Associates’ CEO, William A. (Billy) Mitchell ’58, Darlington alumnus, has been named as chair of Darlington’s Board of Trustees. Mitchell is stepping into this vital leadership position after the former chair of the Board of Trustees, Fred Kennedy ’60, Augusta, Ga., died December 2, 2000 of a sudden heart attack.
“Billy is not only well prepared for this role professionally, but the timing in his life appears right and his and Gladys’ core beliefs and character strengths seem to me a perfect fit for Darlington,” David Hicks said as he announced Mitchell’s chair to the faculty. “We’re very fortunate that he was able and willing to step into this crucial role on such short notice and that Gladys is supportive of this significant commitment at this time in their lives.”
Mitchell has served Darlington through the years as a member of numerous leadership organizations including the Board of Visitors, Campaign for Darlington committee, Design for Darlington campaign Atlanta committee, and he has been a member of the Board of Trustees for the past three years.
Mitchell joined Carter & Associates, one of Atlanta’s largest development and commercial real estate companies with offices in 10 Southeast cities, in 1967 and served as the senior development officer until 1987 when he assumed the position of chief investment officer. In 1991, Mitchell was appointed president of the company and assumed the role of CEO in 1994. Before joining Carter, Mitchell worked for the Federal Security Savings and Loan Association of Atlanta. He began his career with Trust Company of Georgia.
