Middle Schoolers recycle “pop tops”

Darlington Middle School students are finding new ways to recycle. In addition to the normal paper, plastic and aluminum, students are now “popping” and collecting their soda can tops to be used as filters in dialysis machines.
It all started with a suggestion by sixth-grader Ansley McDurmon, who first began collecting soda can tops at her aunt’s suggestion. “I wanted to get more people involved, and the Middle School seemed like a great place to start,” she said. “I asked Assistant Principal Sally MacLeod, and she liked my idea so much that it was announced the next day. Our school does so many community projects, and I’m glad to be a part in helping the less fortunate.”
Starting in October, Middle School students began “popping” their soda tops to help the Ronald McDonald Corporation. “I normally don’t recycle them, but now that they are being used for so much, I will definitely start,” said sixth-grader Anna Forrister.
According to statistics, only one half of the 300 average soda cans bought weekly by Middle Schoolers are currently being recycled, and McDurmon encourages her fellow students to do their part. “The more we do, the closer we get to our goal of everyone recycling,” she said.
