Middle Schoolers keep community service spirit

The Middle School is busy serving the community through a canned food drive, a toy drive, and a paper product drive. Nancy Ivester, seventh grade English teacher, heads up this effort with the support of Assistant Principal Sally MacLeod, and Principal Jim Van Es.
“Our students have so much for which to be thankful. We like to encourage them to share and give to others on a regular basis during the year, not just at Thanksgiving and Christmas. The more involved they get in these community service projects, the more they understand that there are so many people out there who can use our help and understanding,” Ivester said. “Maybe, if Middle Schoolers start serving others now, they will continue to do so as adults.”
The canned food drive, which has already begun, ends Nov. 8, will benefit Rome Urban Ministries, a food and clothing bank located at the South Rome Baptist Church.
In December, the students will be given the opportunity to bring in toys that are new, or used and in good condition, for Angel Express. Angel Express, a nonprofit organization that collects toys, books, and puzzles for children identified by the Department of Family and Children Resources as individuals who could use assistance. Near Christmas, the children are invited to a party at the facilities and they get to choose gifts to take home.
The Hospitality House and the Middle School will team up in January to have a paper product drive. The Hospitality House is a safe house in Rome for abused women and children.
According to MacLeod, the Middle School plans to participate in a service project each month so. “All who are so blessed can help others less fortunate in our community,” MacLeod said.
