Middle School students win essay contest

Four Darlington Middle School students are the winners of savings bonds as area finalists in the Patriot Penn Essay contest held by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). They wrote on the topic of “My Dream for America.”
Seventh grader Alex Purdie received a $200 savings bond from VFW Post 4911 representing Rome, Floyd County, and Polk County as first-place winner. Classmate Patrick Pierson received a $100 savings bond as second-place winner. Eighth graders Hannah Dodd and Ali Terrell won a $75 savings bond for third place and a $50 savings bond for fourth place, respectively.
Patriot’s Pen is a nationwide competition that gives students in sixth through eighth grades the opportunity to write essays expressing their views on democracy. This year, more than 116,000 students wrote a 300-400 word essay based on this year’s theme.
