Middle School students honored at Final Assembly

The Middle School honored several outstanding students Thursday, May 23, at the Final Assembly in the Thatcher Hall Courtyard.
Eighth-graders Addie Holmes of Rome and Zane Anderson of Kingston, Ga., received the James Ross McCain Award, the most prestigious award given at the Middle School. Recipients have demonstrated outstanding leadership ability in all areas of school life, but most importantly in the areas of academic, social, physical and spiritual leadership. These students best exemplify the characteristics of honor, independence and integrity, which are fundamentally essential qualities of leadership.
Eighth-graders Kalia Henry of Cartersville, Ga., and Nicholas Jones of Rydal, Ga., received the M. Hugh Merson Memorial Award, given to the student whose pursuit of excellence in all areas of school life best serves as an example to his fellow students, and who best represents the virtues of character, which Mr. Hugh Merson sought to instill in his students.
Eighth-grader Henry Fields of Kingston, Ga., received the Robert Walther Jr. Memorial Award, given to an eighth-grader who has exhibited the strongest degree of concern and respect for his fellow students, and has rendered unselfish service to the school.
Eighth-grader Haley Harveston of Rome received the Mary Alice Babcock Memorial Award, given to an eighth-grade student who has demonstrated a compassionate and caring attitude to fellow students, who is helpful, friendly, and thoughtful, and who generally places the welfare of others above his/her own.
Eighth-grader Emily Orr of Rome received the Huffman Family Scholarship, established by William M. Huffman Jr. (’67) in honor of William M. Huffman Sr. (’40) and awarded to a rising ninth-grade student who exemplifies academic excellence, character and devotion to the school.
Eighth-grader Christine Tortorice received the George A. Dorsey Memorial Award, given in loving remembrance of George Andrew Dorsey, longtime teacher who example of gentleness and concern deeply influenced decades of Darlington students and faculty. This award recognizes that student who is distinguished by his or her own quest for the knowledge and love of living things.
Eighth-grader Zach Kadum of Silver Creek, Ga., received the Raymond Nora Memorial Award, given to football player who best exemplifies leadership, spirit and cooperation.
Eighth-grader Katie White of Rome received the DAR Good Citizenship Medal, given to the eighth-grade student who has exhibited honor, service, leadership, courage and patriotism.
Eighth-graders Anna Claire Atha of Rome and William Groover of Calhoun, Ga., received the John W. Maddox Athletic Achievement Award, given to the best all-round athlete.
Eighth-graders Mamie Johnson of Rome and Garrett Miller of Cave Spring, Ga.; seventh-graders Hannah Buttshaw and Rand Smith, both of Rome; sixth-graders Carolyn Nida and J.D. Hull, both of Rome; and fifth-graders Sophie Stepp of Calhoun, Ga., and Chandler Pittman of Rome received Parents Association Student Awards, given by grade level to students who have proved to be an overall friend to the school and its students by loyalty, kindness, attendance, allegiance and other good citizen attitudes.
The following fine arts awards were also given:
Eighth-grader Jack Talley of Rome received the Chorus Spirit Award for Tenor. He also received a Four-Year Chrous Award.
Eighth-grader Burt Michael Tidwell of Cartersville, Ga., received the Chorus Spirit Award for Bass.
Eighth-graders Emily Orr and Nile Houser, both of Rome, also received Four-Year Chorus Awards.
Eighth-grader Zane Anderson was named Most Outstanding String Instrumentalist and received the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award.
Eighth-grader Kalia Henry of Cartersville, Ga., was named Most Outstanding Woodwind Instrumentalist.
Eighth-grader Hayes Spence of Rome was named Most Outstanding Brass Instrumentalist.
Eighth-grader Kush Patel of Cedartown, Ga., was named Most Outstanding Percussionist.
Eighth-grader Gianna Pieroni of Rome received the Director’s Award for Leadership.
Eighth-grader Sydney Arthur of Cartersville, Ga., received the Service Beyond Self Award.
