Middle School soccer kicks into high gear

In a strong season, the Middle School boys soccer team is well on their way to a string of victories. “We now have four wins and two losses and have remaining games against Woodward and Mt. Pisgah,” said Middle School soccer coach, Kevin Ivester.
Peter Whatley, eighth grade, came away with a hat trick by scoring three goals in the win against Marietta Middle School. Eighth-grader Bo Brinson scored on a penalty kick, and seventh-grader Will Wittmeier also knocked home an early goal. Eighth-graders Davis Byars and Tristan Griffin, along with seventh-grader Ford Riddle, provided lots of offensive punch, while eighth-graders James Withers and Mac McCord played solidly on defense to help Will Santoro, seventh grade, collect the shutout in goal.
Against Woodward, Byars scored the only goal of the game ten minutes into the first half. The goal came off a set play from a corner kick taken by Brinson. Brinson played a short ball to Whatley who dribbled by a defender and hit a cross across the goalmouth that Byars knocked in from short range. Santoro got the shutout in goal with lots of help from his defense. Joseph Wiggins, seventh grade, was especially strong at outside fullback.
In a winning game against Whitefield Academy, the first goal was scored with five minutes left in the first half on a penalty kick by Whatley, after Byars was taken down in the box. After Whitefield scored to tie it with 13 minutes left in the game, Griffin scored the winning goal on a flying header off a cross from Brinson with eight minutes left.
Byars scored first to put the Tigers up 1-0 three minutes into the game against Lovett. After Lovett tied it 1-1, Whatley scored and the Tigers ended the half leading 2-1. But two Lovett goals in the second half resulted in a 3-2 loss.
After a 3-0 loss to Wesleyan, the Tigers challenged Whitefield Academy again. Whatley scored first on a penalty kick to put the Tigers up 1-0. Then McCord knocked home the second goal to make it 2-0 at the half. Whatley scored his second goal of the game on a breakaway in the second half to make it 3-0. Withers, Wiggins, Wittmeier, and eighth-grader Peter Hjort, provided excellent defense in front of goalie Santoro to preserve the shutout.
