Our character tenant for the month of January in grades PK-8 is passion, so we invited Shawn Powell ('07) to speak to Middle School students about how his passion for football helped him overcome multiple adversities and enabled him to find success in the NFL.

Shawn spoke to an enamored Middle School. He shared that school wasn't always easy for him. He realized that if he truly wanted to play football in the NFL, it would take more than dedication on the field. He would need to put everything he had into his school work.

Shawn shared that he was diagnosed with learning differences and ADHD. He talked of long hours in the Learning Center and working with teachers, explaining that his passion for the game outweighed the teasing that he may have endured from others.

Shawn also talked about the back injury he suffered his junior year in college. He explained the hard work and dedication it took to recover. He shared that his passion paved the way to opportunity for him.

The students were excited to hear him speak. He had them laughing and invited them to ask questions. We all appreciate his time and are proud to know that he is a Darlington Tiger!
