Middle School places second in My Place contest

Darlington's Middle School recently won second place in the My Place contest, sponsored by the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Georgia.
My Place is a patriotic services project geared toward students in grades 4-6. The project's purpose is to instill in each student a sense of pride, place and patriotism. Projects were judged on creativity, originality and adherance to theme.
"The creators of My Place felt that too many young people do not have a true understanding of or appreciation for how or where they fit in their home, school, community, state and world and their potential for making a significant contribution in each of these areas," said Leila Case, chairperson of the My Place contest. "We hope that this project enables students to recognize their potential and become informed contributing citizens."
Darlington sixth-graders decided they would put together holiday care packages for the soldiers in Delta Company who are currently serving an Afghanistan. The students painted cigar boxes for soldiers to store their letters and personal items; decorated goody bags filled with toiletries, dental items and candy; made greeting cards and wrote letters; and collected Beanie Babies and small toys for the soldiers to give to Afghan children.
"Darlington's community project was fabulous," Case said. "The students obviously spent many hours on the boxes and goody bags. Everyone involved is to be commended and congratulated for their effort, as it obviously required a terrific amount of work from students, teachers and adults in the community. This project certainly encouraged the students to think about patriotism."
