McConnell covers National Signing Day for national student media outlet

Sophomore Matthew McConnell recently joined other students and media professionals in Atlanta to cover National Signing Day at the College Football Hall of Fame on Feb. 4.

The Darlington student attended the event as a part of his role as a sports reporter for student media outlet SmackHigh.com, and got to work alongside the High5Sports team from WAGA-TV Channel 5.

At the event McConnell shot photography and gathered video footage of different high-level football recruits as they signed letters of intent for colleges including the Georgia Institute of Technology, Louisiana State University, the University of Georgia, the University of South Carolina, and the University of Tennessee. Student signees at the celebration represented high schools across Georgia including Alpharetta, Buford, Gwinnett, Mill Creek, North Gwinnett and many more. 

Smack High is billed as Georgia's largest collection of high school student-submitted news stories, with a focus on sports and entertainment. Smack High has dedicated writers in 24 states and regions in Canada and the United States.

McConnell is the official Smack High representative for Darlington and the surrounding area. In his Smack High roles, McConnell comes up with creative content and photography to help tell the story of local high school sports, sharing it on a variety of platforms. 

McConnell currently takes Video Production at Darlington, and also assists with Darlingtonian.com. To prepare himself for his collegiate studies and acclimate himself to the environment, McConnell plans to take the school's brand new Sports and Arts Media class. Following his graduation from Darlington, he plans to major in journalism and minor in film production.
