Marcus Achieves Perfect SAT; Named STAR Student

For achieving Darlington's highest SAT score among seniors in the top 10 percent of his class, Adam Marcus has been selected as Darlington's STAR student for 1998-99. Marcus accomplished the extraordinary feat by earning a perfect score 800 math and 800 verbal on the SAT taken Saturday, Oct. 20.
"We are very proud of Adam. In the past, he has scored a couple of perfect 800s on the math section. What a fantastic achievement to score a perfect 1600 at a single testing," said Headmaster David Rhodes.
Although Adam excels in all of his academics, he is extremely strong in maths and sciences. "I have taught math for 30 years. Adam is one of the top four or five students in math whom I have ever taught. In addition to his academic success, he often tutors his fellow students," said Carl Paxton, Upper School math instructor.
The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program was established by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, and the Georgia Department of Education in order to reward student excellence in scholastics and to allow students to acknowledge the teacher most inspiring for them.
Adam chose Upper School Latin instructor Jeff Allen as his STAR teacher. "I couldn't have made a perfect score without him," Adam said.
"Adam is undoubtedly one of the brightest students with whom I have come in contact," Allen said. "Perhaps the best example of his abilities is that he now reads Latin at the level of a college graduate student. Not surprisingly, he is presently in AP Latin and plans to take the exam this spring."
Adam has been an officer in the Junior Classical League, a club for Latin students, for two years, and currently serves as president.
