Magazine Editor Addresses Career Day Students

Neely Young, editor and publisher of Georgia Trend Magazine, was the keynote speaker for the Alumni Council-sponsored Career Day, on Jan. 16. Young, a native of Cedartown, Ga., attended Cedartown High School, Darlington School, and Shorter College, graduating from the University of Georgia in 1965. His professional service portrait is extensive. He has served as president of both the Georgia Press Association and the Associated Press of Georgia and has chaired the Georgia Press Education Foundation. His efforts also include previous membership on the boards of the University of Georgia Henry Grady School of Journalism and the School of Urban Affairs at Georgia State University.
Young recalled for the students his memories of what made his experience at Darlington so great. “I have benefited from the good teachers I had and the socialization skills I learned,” he said. “I also learned the importance of working with people. Darlington taught me that making a difference in other people’s lives is the most important goal, not making money.” He shared his personal key to success as well, which is that “when the door of life opens for you, walk through it.”
More than 30 speakers, many of them alumni, traveled from across the country to address Upper School students on subjects including forestry, radio and television communication, fine arts, and architecture. With the continued expansion of Darlington’s Web site, students registered for the topics of their choice via their student pages.
