Matthew Lucarelli Watson ('96) was recognized with a halftime presentation at the Alumni Weekend football game for his outstanding athletic achievements during his time as a Darlington student.
During his four years at Darlington, Lucarelli Watson established himself as one of the finest distance runners in Georgia and one of the most accomplished athletes in the school's history. Despite holding four individual and two team state championships, perhaps his most impressive accomplishment is his school record in the mile, which still stands 30 years later at 4 minutes, 22.5 seconds.
"Grit, discipline, and humility are the words that come to mind when I think about Matt," said Rob Davis, former Darlington teacher and assistant cross country coach. "He set the bar for the sport. He pushed harder and raced smarter than anyone else. Matt was coachable; he listened when [we] gave him advice. No matter how significant the accomplishment, Matt never let it go to his head. He was a coach's dream: talent, work ethic, and coachability."
Lucarelli Watson helped lead Darlington to two cross country team state championships in 1993 and 1995, with state runner-up finishes in 1992 and 1994. He was the 1994 state runner-up in cross country before capturing the 1995 individual state championship.
On the track, Lucarelli Watson was a state runner-up in both the 1600 and 3200 meters in 1995 before winning state championships in both events in 1996. He also captured the indoor 3000-meter state championship, competing against runners from all four Georgia classifications.
“When you look at the history of Darlington athletics, Matthew Lucarelli Watson deserves to be in the conversation as one of the greatest athletes ever to wear the Purple and White," said Athletic Director Mitch Jordan ('90). "His accomplishments in cross country and track and field are remarkable, but what really stands out to me is that his mile record has stood for 30 years. Think about the thousands of talented student-athletes who have come through Darlington during that time. That puts his achievement into perspective. Matthew set a standard of excellence that has endured for three decades, and we were proud to welcome him home and recognize his incredible legacy.”
Following graduation, Lucarellli Watson continued his running career at the United States Air Force Academy and Georgia Tech. He is currently an artist living in London with his wife Noa, and their daughter, Gaia.
