Lowrey receives national recognition

Senior Barton Lowrey’s academic, athletic and leadership abilities have won him two honors so far this year.
He has been named a recipient of the 2004 Hall of Fame State of Georgia Scholar Athlete Award, sponsored by ChevronTexaco, the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation, Gallagher Electric and Engineering Company, Georgia High School Association and the Greater Atlanta Chapter of the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame.
“[Lowrey is] one of the top 40 scholar-athletes for football in the state of Georgia for 2004,” said Georgia A. Morris Jr., president of the Greater Atlanta Chapter of the National College Football Hall of Fame.
Havoline will provide Lowrey with a $1,000 scholarship at the ChevronTexaco Scholarship Luncheon and “Chalk Talk” presented by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Thursday, Dec. 30, at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis.
Lowrey has also been selected as one of 400 outstanding scholars from around the United States who will participate in the National Young Leaders Conference (NYLC) in Washington, D.C. in early March.
The theme of NYLC is “The Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting the Leaders of Today,” and participants will spend 10 days interacting with a variety of personnel who operate within the three branches of government, the news media and the international community.
“We often hear from members of Congress, political appointees and members of Washington’s press corps that it is a privilege to meet and interact with students like Barton Lowrey because they are the face of our country’s future,” said Mike Lasday, executive director of the Congressional Youth Leadership Council, the organization that sponsors the conference. “What these students learn at the NYLC will enable them to build coalitions with one another and exercise their own leadership skills within communities around the country.”
Highlights of past conferences have included welcoming remarks from the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives and a panel discussion with prominent journalists at the National Press Club, in addition to meeting with senators and representatives or appointed staff members to discuss important issues facing the nation.
To complement the schedule of meetings, Lowrey will also participate in a number of leadership skill-building activities and simulations. The conference culminates with the Model Congress, in which scholars assume the roles of U.S. Representatives and debate, amend and vote on proposed mock legislation.
Lowrey is the son of Drs. Darrell and Becky Lowrey of Rome, Ga.
