Lower School students place in area spelling bee

After a very exciting final round, five Lower School students were still in the running at the annual Independent School Spelling Bee hosted by Berry College Elementary and Middle School. In the end, St. Mary's fifth-grader Gabriela Lumpkin won first with Darlington third-grader Anna Kate Roberts in second and Darlington fourth-grader Katie White in third.
The competition included 45 students from Darlington School, Unity Christian School, St. Mary’s Catholic School, Berry College Elementary and Middle School, and Excel Christian Academy in Cartersville.
“Weeks of preparation paid off for our students with five of our nine participants making it to the final round,” said Renee Hutchins, learning specialist and spelling bee coach. "All of our students performed very well and seemed self-assured in the competition. Anna Kate and Katie were so excited to receive their trophies from Berry's headmaster, Paul Atkinson. Both students were very gracious and immediately congratulated the other participants."
Each participating student from Darlington received a T-shirt and a certificate. They also appeared on WDLS, the Lower School's daily closed-circuit TV program, on Friday morning with Hutchins to celebrate their success.
