Lower School: Spring is Right Around the Corner

I hope that everyone had a wonderful spring break and was able to enjoy some time relaxing with your children. Looking at the weather forecast, a beautiful spring is right around the corner. We have 12 weeks left to finish out the school year and I can assure you that it will speed by as it is packed to the brim with all types of activities. 

We will have three transition days this week for students in grades 2-4, who will be moving in to Thatcher Hall (which currently houses grades 5-8) next school year. On Tuesday, second-graders will travel to the current Middle School for lunch, a tour and a buddy activity. On Thursday, third-graders will do the same. On Friday, fourth-graders should be dropped off at the Middle School between 7:30-7:50 a.m. in time for Morning Flagpole. They will participate in fifth-grade classes, including P.E.; proceed on a tour of the facilities; and enjoy lunch before traveling to the Lower School for the remainder of the afternoon.

Wednesday, March 13, will be a late start day with school beginning at 8:30 a.m.

On Wednesday, March 13, third-graders are holding their Second Annual Wax Museum, featuring famous people from Georgia. Students have read biographies about their historical figures, which were reinforced through the nonfiction unit during Reading Workshop; been guided through their research with the help of our librarian, Mrs. Glass; created a portrait with assistance from our art teacher, Mrs. Moore; developed an iMovie on their iPads through coordination with our instructional technology expert, Mrs. Kinney; and received artistic influence on movement through our theater director, Mr. Plough. Parents and students PK-12 are invited to attend this event, which will take place all day in the Lower School Gym.

The Ceilidh [KAY-lee] Celtic Ensemble will share an assortment of Scottish and Irish folk songs, performed on flute, harp, violin, guitar, Irish bouzouki, accordion, bass guitar, and vocals on March 15 at 10:45 a.m. in the Lower School Gym.

Doughnuts for Dads will take place from 7:45 to 8:45 a.m. on Friday, March 22, in Tiger Hall. All dads are invited to come to Tiger Hall to enjoy doughnuts and coffee with their children.

Pre-kindergarten will present their musical, “We’re having a Great Day in Pre-K,” on Friday, March 22, at 9 a.m. in the gym. Please join us as we experience the exciting learning activities that are integrated daily in our pre-kindergarten program.

The Student Council will sponsor a spirit week March 25-28. Monday will be pajama day, Tuesday will be tacky day, Wednesday will be favorite TV/movie character day and Thursday will be "nerd" day.

Easter break will begin on Friday, March 29. We will have a full day on Thursday, March 28. Classes resume Monday, April 1.

Grand-special Day will take place on Friday, April 12, and will include a spring concert and Early Dismissal at 11:45 a.m. All grandparents and special people are invited to this event. Please look for a reservation form to be sent out after Easter.

In planning for time off from work and summer vacations, our last day of school this year will be on Friday, May 31. We will hold the Lower School Awards Ceremony at 10:30 a.m., which will be immediately followed by dismissal.

Finally, we are continuing to work on safety efforts and procedures. Students will no longer be allowed to be checked out during a lock-down drill or actual event. Parents are encouraged to find a safe location; however, if parents choose to come to school to check on their child, they may join the class in the safe place.

We are excitedly busy and involved in planning for the following school year. We welcome any input, ideas and concerns that you may have.
