Lower School music program expands with Darlington String Project

Darlington Lower School is pleased to announce that its music program will be expanded with the help of cellist and educator Annie Camp, who will serve as the Darlington String Project instructor.
“I believe Ms. Camp has some good ideas, backed by an abundance of training and experience, and has a fun-loving and kid-friendly approach to teaching,” said Diane Lumpkin, assistant principal.
To preview the program, Camp gave a presentation to fourth and fifth grade classes at the Lower School’s Aug. 20 assembly. With the help of a guest clinician, Camp showed students each of the stringed instruments in half sizes and gave a few lucky volunteers the opportunity to play them.
“Ms. Camp has made arrangements for a music shop to bring a van of good quality rental instruments to our campus on a designated date so that interested parents can rent nice instruments for their students,” said Lumpkin. “The initial music, folders and other supplies will also be available through this music service.”
According to Lumpkin, the Darlington String Project will be an after-school program offered Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Classes will last approximately one hour. There will be an independent tuition charge for the program, payable to Darlington String Project. Interested parents may attend an informational meeting Monday, Aug. 30, at 6 p.m. in Tiger Hall on the Lower School campus.
“Participation in the arts has been proven to act as a catalyst for increased student motivation and achievement across the curriculum,” said Lumpkin. “Parents who are interested in supplementing their child’s education with all the value inherent in string instruction that’s fun should consider enrolling their children in this program.”
Camp, a graduate of Julliard who is also certified by the New York School for Strings, plays cello with the Atlanta Opera and has also performed with the Atlanta Symphony and Alabama Symphony Orchestras. She is also an adjunct professor of cello at Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn. Before moving to Georgia, Camp was a string orchestra teacher in New York City, where she designed and implemented her own original program in three elementary schools. She and her husband, William, live in Rockmart, Ga., with their children William, 4, and Mary, 5.
