Lower School elects Student Council reps

Forty-five students ran for office during the Lower School’s Student Council election this month. In the end, five were selected to hold office: fifth-grader Marshall McCann, president; fourth-grader Keara Evans, vice president; fourth-grader Abby Cantrell, secretary; and third-graders MacKenzie Smallwood and Gamble Shadday, co-treasurers.
“Student Council will allow our students to learn basic Parliamentary procedures, public speaking, and become positive role models for our student body,” said Steve Bartholomew, director of Lower School. “This experience is part of a comprehensive effort by the Lower School to prepare all students for effective civic participation.”
Representatives elected for each grade include Burton Dulaney, Katie Hutchins, Luke Johnson, Will Crawford, Anna Katherine Cates and Holt Brewster. These students will attend all Student Council meetings, support the officers, participate in all Student Council-sponsored activities, work with classroom teachers to communicate events, keep good academic standing, and be positive role models for their peers.
“I was very pleased with the way these students handled themselves and their campaigns,” said Bartholomew. “They delivered great speeches to an audience of peers, faculty and parents. We are very proud of our student leaders and thank them for a job well done.”
Upcoming events sponsored by Student Council include a Sock Hop, Campus Clean-Up, Donut Sales, Warm Clothing Drive and Angel Tree Project. These students are also responsible for campus recycling.
