Lower, Middle and Upper School Bands present Christmas concert

More than 100 students from grades 5-12 came together to present the annual Lower, Middle and Upper School Bands Christmas concert Monday, Dec. 13, at 7:30 p.m. in Morris Chapel.
“From our point of view, we share the sounds of Christmas with the audience in hopes of bringing the joy of the holiday season to the listeners and the participants,” said Bill King, band director.
The concert began with the Lower School Band’s performance of “Good King Wenceslas,” “Jolly Old St. Nicholas” and “Jingle Bells.” The Middle School band then played “A Christmas Medley” (a collection of various Christmas selections), “Christmas in the Kitchen” (a salute to the work mothers do to prepare Christmas dinner) and “A Caribbean Christmas.”
The Upper School Wind Ensemble took over from there, performing “Christmas Fanfares” and “A Christmas Portrait.” The Woodwind Choir then played four traditional Christmas selections: “Angels We Have Heard on High,” two settings of “Away in A Manger,” “Silent Night” and “Joy to the World.”
The program concluded with the Brass Choir’s performance of “O Come, O Come Emmanuel,” “The First Noel” and “We Three Kings.”
“Neither the Middle School or Upper School Bands have a single class where all of the students practice together at one time, and because of the after-school activities programs, after-school practice is virtually impossible. This makes it very challenging to put pieces together,” said King. “We even have a few band students in the Upper School who don’t even have a band class, but come by and get the music from me and I work with them whenever we can get together to go over the music. So, the only time these bands are complete is at the performance.
“I could not be happier with the way these students work. I am very proud of all of them for being willing to work on putting programs like this together, knowing it is a little harder for us to do it. I admire them for the time and dedication they give to this program. It speaks volumes about their sense of loyalty, dedication and responsibility.”
