Local author visits Lower School

Local author Sheila Dhir visited the Lower School Wednesday, April 19 to do a writer’s workshop with first- and second-graders.
"Sheila's latest books are very sensitive and timely," said Lower School Librarian Ann Glass. "They discuss awkward, frightening subjects with sensitivity. She manages to relay facts and maintain optimism at the same time."
Dhir, who is native to India, has written and illustrated 10 books for young children. Her most recent books include “Why Are You Afraid to Hold My Hand?” which is about children with disabilities, and “Why Am I Afraid of Cancer?”
In the workshop, Dhir helped each student begin a story. She also shared with them Indian bracelets and tikas.
"Then she wrote each child’s name in Hindu, explaining that the written language did not focus on spelling but on the way the name sounded," said Glass. "They were fascinated by the writing."
The students also received magnet-backed paper so they could draw a cover for their book and hang it on the refrigerator at home.
