Local author brings class to Antidote

Local community theater doesn't always produce Broadway shows. Once in a while, a play comes along that needs to be given a chance to shine. "Summer Reports Grade: 3" is one of those shows.
Written by Rome native Jeffery Self, the show is being produced by Antidote Theatre Company under the direction of recent Darlington grad Logan O'Riley ('08), who said that while the show is locally written and produced, area audiences can expect great writing and acting when it opens on Aug. 1.
The show centers around three third-grade students who have just finished their summer vacation and are returning to school. Their first assignment is to present reports on how they spent their vacation.
"Each of them tells their story and each raises issues that many people in the audience and in the community will be able to relate to," O'Riley said. "But it's all done in a comedic way."
Some of the issues raised deal with cultural taboos, however comically they're presented. One student tells of her brother coming home from college and coming out of the closet while the other bids goodbye to a best friend as his parents go through a divorce.
"They each give their report and the stories intertwine," O'Riley said. "It's all done as a comedy, and the actors are very talented."
The children will be played by local actors and Darlington students Stephanie Schecter ('09), Anna Stephenson ('09) and Patrick Wilson ('08).
The set, O'Riley said, will put audiences right back in the classroom. The split-level set takes viewers from the interior of the student's class, complete with a chalkboard, to a typical summer vacation scene with toys, bicycles and games.
"Summer Reports Grade: 3" runs Aug. 1-3 at Shorter College's Callaway Theater. Shows begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $6 and are available by e-mailing antidotetheatrecompany@gmail.com or at the door on the evening of the show.
