Following a successful first year, Darlington Summer Camps once again promises a fun-filled summer for overnight and day campers.
OVERNIGHT CAMPS for middle school aged campers include the following: Eco-Adventure Camp, with three sessions, Rocketry and Robotics Camp, and specialized sports camps, Golf, Fast Pitch Softball, and Tennis. Overnight campers sleep in Darlington’s air-conditioned student housing, eat in the school’s full service dining room, and take full advantage of the school’s 500-acre campus.
Eco-Adventure Darlington led by Upper School instructor Owen Kinney, for boys and girls entering sixth through ninth grades, gives campers two weeks per session of outdoor fun and nature exploration on Darlington’s campus and at the abundant outdoor sites in Northwest Georgia. Camp activities include whitewater rafting, kayaking/canoeing, rock climbing and rappelling, mountain biking, hiking, backpacking, camping, spelunking, stream restoration and biological monitoring, snorkeling, creating native wildlife habitats, monitoring water quality, exploring marshlands and wetlands conservation, touring, and pursuing Boy and Girl Scout Merit badge criteria.
Rockets and Robotics Camp led by Upper School instructor Dr. Bob McGraw, for boys and girls entering sixth through ninth grades, provides hands-on educational experiences in two cutting-edge technology fields, robotics and rocketry.
Fast Pitch Softball Camp, for girls entering sixth through ninth grades, is directed by one of the sport’s most well known names, Deb Sonnenberg, a 1996 Canadian Olympic pitcher and present Mercer University assistant coach.
Golf Camp, for boys and girls entering sixth through ninth grades, allows campers to improve golf skills with one-on-one instruction from Darlington varsity coaches and players and from guest speaker, Caroline Peek Blaylock, a seven-year Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) member and three-time National College Athletic Association (NCAA) All-American. The camp uses Rome’s Stonebridge Golf Course.
Darlington Summer Camps offers eight DAY CAMPS this summer, outdoor adventure in Camp Darlington, specialized sports camps including Total Football, Boys, Girls, Junior Basketball, and Cheerleading, and two camps for young children, Artistic Expression and Delightascope.
Boys and girls, ages 7-12, make full use of Darlington’s campus and facilities in Camp Darlington. Each morning, campers choose three activities from those offered – archery, canoeing, tag football, tennis, Whiffle ball, riflery, arts and crafts, basketball, soccer, Capture the Flag, and Frisbee golf. After lunch in the School’s dining room, campers enjoy afternoon activities like swimming. The first Friday of each session is a trip day. Campers participate in an afternoon of bowling or skating, followed by evening games and swimming, and concluded with a “lock-in” in which campers spend the night in the gym. This is Shari Cannon’s sixth year as Darlington School’s fifth grade teacher’s aide, after-school caregiver, and now a pre-kindergarten teacher’s aide. She has worked with Camp Darlington for five years and became the director last year.
Total Football Camp, for boys, ages 10-14, helps campers master the fundamentals and learn passing and receiving. Darlington Head Varsity Football Coach Tommy Atha, other Darlington varsity coaches, and coaches from other area high school, as well as current and former college players lead the camp.
Boys Basketball Camp, for boys, ages 9-14, allows campers to compete daily in shooting and team play. Led by Darlington Head Varsity Basketball Coach Jim Van Es, Darlington varsity and junior varsity coaches, assisted by high school and college players, teach fundamental skills – shooting, dribbling, passing, rebounding, defending, and setting and using screens.
Girls Basketball, for girls, ages 9-14, teaches the fundamentals as well. Director Angie Milford, head coach for Darlington’s girls varsity basketball team, has extensive experience in playing collegiate Division I, coaching at the collegiate and high school level, and directing summer camps.
Junior Basketball, for girls, ages 5-8, also led by Coach Angie Milford, teaches younger girls the fundamentals and rules of basketball in a fast-moving, half-day format designed for younger attention spans.
Cheerleading Camp, for girls 5-13, uses fun daily themes to introduce cheerleading to young girls and increase older girls’ skills. Daily themes include: Tuesday Miss-match Day, Wednesday Red, White, and Blue Day, Thursday Pajama Day, and Friday Purple & White Day. Pep rallies for each session cap the week’s activities. Angela Pieroni, Darlington’s varsity cheerleading coach, directs this camp.
Artistic Expressions Camp, for boys and girls, ages 7-11, explores the world of art in a week full of music, arts and crafts, and drama. Campers spend time each day learning musical concepts in keyboard computer lab, working on drama skills on stage, and creating works of art. Campers are divided into age groups according to grade completion. Twenty-five year veteran teacher Diane Lumpkin, currently Darlington’s Lower School assistant principal and music teacher and Katie Clotfelter, an 11-year art teacher and 1989 Darlington graduate, are co-camp directors.
Delightascope Camp, for boys and girls, ages 2-8, focuses on the theme, “Spotlight on Favorite Authors,” with a series of workshops, including: Thinking and Creating Workshop, Spotlight on Favorite Authors story-reading, Let’s Find Out Why, Getting into Action, And the Beat Goes On. Self-contained classes include: Terrific 3s in which three-year-olds explore, discover, and experience the theme of the week, and Two Hands-On, in which two-year-old campers explore a creative and imaginative sensory approach to complement the weekly themes. Delightascope is run by 14-year Lower School veteran Patricia Ayer.
