Learning about atoms is no small thing

When eighth grade students were trying to understand the components of atoms in December, their instructor, James Hutchins, discovered that models could help. “I wanted the students to have a clear idea of how the atom is constructed, so we decided to build an atom model,” Hutchins said.
The class studied matter, elements, atoms, and the history regarding the atom. “It was a neat way to learn about the atom,” Polly Roberts said about building the model.
“We also studied about Dalton, Thomas, Rutherford, and Bohr, and their contributions to our knowledge of the atom,” Hutchins said. The classwork with atoms was the building block for studying compounds, mixtures, and their properties.
