Learn about The Importance of Being Earnest in fall play

Darlington Players will perform Oscar Wilde’s play, The Importance of Being Earnest, this fall. Wilde satirizes the institution of marriage during the Victorian Age. He considered marriage quite trivial, and although he ended the play happily, he implied that the “marriage” of social values and institution of marriage are often destructive. In his opinion, the aristocracy considered marriage a vehicle for achieving higher social stature rather than a celebration of love.
Cast members include Brandon Goodman as John Worthing, J.P., Timmy Pakron as Algernon Moncrieff, Edward Bonnyman as the Rev. Canon Chasuble, D.D., Daniel Sabet as Merriman, Caitlin Murray as Lane, Katie Tumlin as Lady Bracknell, Abigail Polk as Gwendonlen Fairfax, Brittany Pittman as Cecily Cardew, and Sarah-Kate Henderson as Miss Prism. Understudies are Jodi Hylton as Lady Bracknell, Lauren Bowling and Ryan Randles as Gwendolen Fairfax, Jody Milford as Cecily Cardew, and Kate Chapman as Miss Prism. Molly Renew is stage manager and Caroline Holbrook is assistant to the director.
The play will be held Oct. 10-12, at 8 p.m. in the Zelle Drama Room and as part of the Fall Parents Weekend, Oct. 17, at 4 p.m., also in the Zelle Drama Room. The Darlington Players will take an abridged version of the play to the Region One-Act Competition on Oct. 28 in Cedartown Auditorium. They hope to win that competition so they can perform at the state level on Nov. 15.
