The Darlington girls captured the team title in the Region AA Cross Country championships held Nov. 2 at home, while the boys finished No. 2.

The Lady Tigers, with five runners in the top-20, compiled 65 points, followed closely by Calhoun (71), Rockmart (73) and Lafayette (74). All four of teams qualified for next Saturday’s Class AA state meet in Carrollton.

“This was easily our best race of the season,” said cross country coach Ken Wempe. “This was the first time all of our girls ran like they’re capable of running.”

Junior Elizabeth Buice was Darlington’s top runner, placing sixth with a time of 20:41, while teammate Grier Fricks, also a junior, was ninth at 21:33.

In the boys meet, Darlington finished second to Rockmart, with Pepperell and Model in third and fourth, respectively. Junior Elliott Echols was Darlington’s top runner, earning third at 17:02. He was joined in the top-10 by junior Jason Alred (fifth), senior Alex Glass (seventh) and junior Mike Ostbye (eighth).

“That was just an awesome race,” said Wempe. “Some great, great competition.”
