Lady Tigers retire Erwin's number

As one of the area's dominant post players, Meggie Beth Erwin ('03) grew accustomed to being the center of attention during her playing career.
And on Saturday [Jan. 8], the Darlington School graduate found herself in the spotlight again.
Erwin, who was a shot-blocking, point-producing machine for the Lady Tigers from 1999-2003 was honored by the Darlington program Saturday after the Lady Tigers' Region 6-AA game against Chattooga at the Huffman Center.
Erwin's No. 32 jersey was retired during the ceremony.
"In my 11 years of coaching," Coach Angie Milford said, "I've never had a player who had such a dominating presence on the court as Meggie Beth."
Erwin, a 6-foot-1 player, left an indelible mark on the Darlington program. She compiled 1,281 points, 815 rebounds and a whopping 251 blocked shots - a school record - during her career.
She also holds several single-game records, including most points (39) and most blocked shots (11).
In her final three seasons with the Lady Tigers, Erwin was the team's most valuable player.
Erwin, who is a sophomore at the University of Georgia, was a two-time member of the Rome News-Tribune All-Area team, a three-time member of the Northwest Georgia Tip-off Club team and was an All-Region 6-AA Team pick her senior season.
"Meggie Beth had many awards and records during her career at Darlington," Milford said, "and yet she always remained humble.
"She never liked the spotlight, but during crunch-time in a game, she would say with confidence 'get me the ball!' I think that her qualities off the court made me respect her as much as her work ethic on the court and what she meant to the team."
