Lacrosse team to raise money for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation

As the City of Rome prepares to host the Clocktower Classic international handcycling event April 22-24, Darlington’s varsity girls’ lacrosse team is making big plans for the lemonade stand they will manage during the event.
The lemonade stand will benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, an organization that emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). At the age of 4, she announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since then, the foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement, complete with thousands of volunteers across the country carrying on her legacy of hope. To date, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation has raised more than $25 million towards fulfilling Alex’s dream of finding a cure, funding over 80 research projects nationally.
“Scottish handcyclist Kenny Herriot will not be racing in the Classic this year because he is currently participating in the ‘Great Lemon Ride’ from San Francisco to New York on his handcycle to raise money for Alex’s Lemonade Stand,” said Ann Hortman, event coordinator from the Greater Rome Convention & Visitors Bureau. “My daughter, Darlington junior Katherine Hortman, heard about Mr. Herriot’s efforts and wanted to do something to support ALSF, so she decided to get her lacrosse team involved.”
Darlington’s lemonade stand will be located in the parking lot behind Harvest Moon Café, which is also the start/finish line for the Clocktower Classic. The stand will be open April 24 from 5 p.m. until they sell out. A special thanks to Chick-fil-A for donating the lemonade. Darlington School will also hold the individual time trial for the event on April 22.
The Clocktower Classic is the only race in the United States on the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Para-cycling calendar for 2009. Handcycling is a form of adaptive cycling that enables athletes of all abilities to ride a “bike” exclusively using the upper body. For the past four years, the Clocktower Classic has been sanctioned by the U.S. Handcycling Federation. This is the first year it will hold the prestige of being a UCI P1 race.
