Lauren Jane Tharp, Darlington senior, was diagnosed with leukemia on April 9, 2003. A varsity basketball and lacrosse player, Tharp’s teammates on the girl’s varsity lacrosse team have supported her with gifts, flowers, and visits, and have honored her with their participation in the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Relay for Life. This annual relay, which entails a walk around a track from 7 p.m. to 9 a.m. allowed the girls to raise over $1,300 in donations from parents, students, faculty, and friends.

The efforts are much appreciated by Tharp’s family. “At a time when she is questioning why this happened to her, an 18 year old girl who is getting ready to start a new life and head to UGA, it is very comforting to know how much her friends support her,” Carol Mitchell, Darlington Lower School faculty member and mother to Tharp said.
