Lacrosse players bring team to victory

Darlington seniors Ben McElrath, Robert Sturdivant, and Jeff Hortman recently helped the Southeast All-Star team win the 29th Annual Vail Lacrosse Shootout Tournament B Division Championship. The team, composed of players from Rome, Chattanooga, Nashville, and the Atlanta Area, was a newcomer to the tournament this year.
The tournament consisted of three matches. McElrath scored a goal in the second match, helping the team beat the St. Louis-based Team Gateway, which was a favorite to win the A Tournament Championship. The Southeast All-Star team secured their victory by defeating Team Oregon 9-4.
“[Our team] stunned the tournament by performing so well,” Hortman said. “Sturdivant provided excellent short-stick defensive play to keep Team Oregon’s offense under control.”
The Vail Lacrosse Shootout Tournament is an annual summer competition featuring teams from all across the country. McElrath, Sturdivant, and Hortman qualified for the team in an invitational tryout held earlier in the summer.
