Lacrosse Nets Strong Season

Girls Lacrosse
Facing strong competition, girls lacrosse had a noteworthy first season with a 2-7 record thus far.
A 0-13 loss to last year’s state runner-up, Lovett, began the season. “We did not even attempt a shot on goal in that game,” Coach Kevin Purpura said. “From there, we improved.”
At Chattahoochee, March 2, the Tigers lost, 6-11, giving up two goals in the last 30 seconds. Against Centennial, March 25, the Tigers were winning at the half, 8-3, but squandered the lead and lost by a goal. Next, March 25, the Tigers lost to defending state champions, Westminster Academy, 4-18.
Darlington fell to Woodward Academy 3-12, March 30. Then lost the next two games: April 14, at Centennial, 4-11 and April 17, Roswell 4-8.
“The second Centennial game was not a sharp outing for us, and the Roswell game featured their extraordinary goalie,” Purpura said. Roswell’s goalie saved 19 shots.
The North Springs game, April 20, was the Tigers’ opportunity to gauge themselves against the only other first-year team in the state, and the Tigers dominated. With a lead of 6-0 at the half, the girls never looked back. Rhonda Wilson assisted Lauren Tharp and Alice Griffin for goals against North Springs.
The girls defeated Chattahoochee 11-9 on April 25.
“I have been was really proud of these kids,” Purpura said. “They had the courage to begin a new sport knowing they would play experienced teams. These girls are building the foundation for a highly competitive program.”
Boys Lacrosse
Boys lacrosse, with a 6 -2 regular season record, began with wins against, Centennial, 12-6, March 15; Pope High, 10-3, March 17; Chattahoochee High, 8-7, March 21; and North Springs, 9-0, March 29.
From there they experienced a pattern of ups and downs. They lost to state runner-up, Lovett, April 6, 5-9. Aagainst Westminster, April 8, the Tigers emerged victorious, 13-8. The boys fell to Woodward, 5-9, April 11. They were up again to beat Chattahoochee, 13-1, April 13. The Tigers defeated Centennial, April 15, 10-7. They continued the streak by conquering North Springs, 6-1, April 18. Darlington lost at Lovett, 9-3, April 20. Consistent to the wave, the Tigers rose again to defeat Roswell, 9-3, April 27. The Tigers completed the season at Pace Academy where they fell, 4-10, April 29. State semifinals are scheduled for May 3and finals, May 6.
