Lacrosse Defeats Lovett for State Championship

Darlington added a jewel to its crown of 1998-99 state championships by winning the Georgia State Lacrosse Tournament hosted by Darlington May 8.
In the semi-finals, the Tigers defeated the War Eagles 9-8 in double overtime, with the tie broken by John McElrath.
In the title match, Darlington beat Lovett 10-7 for the Tigers’ and Head Coach Tim Foote’s first state championship since the Georgia High School Lacrosse League began in 1997. The team finished 13-2, 11-0 in-state.
The defensive effort was marked by the outstanding play of goalie Jean Baptiste Vervaeck and Patrick Dollar, Will Gore, Chip Johnson, and Culver Kidd. The offense was led by Robert Hortman, John Scott Husser, and McElrath. Hortman, the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, had eight goals on the day, four per game, to lead the Tigers in scoring.
Hortman, Kidd, and McElrath were named to the Georgia Lacrosse League’s All-League team. Hortman was also selected as the state’s All-American and will play in the All-American game this summer.
