King and I receives praise

Ticket sales shattered all previous records as over 2000 people joined the cheering audience of Darlington’s spring performance of The King and I over the course of its three-day run. Opening on Feb. 8 and running through Feb. 10, the Darlington Fine Arts department presented this Rodgers and Hammerstein musical on the 100th anniversary of the birth of Rodgers. Fourteen Lower School students joined 13 Middle School students and over 50 Upper School students in the cast of this production with ages ranging from five to 18 years old. In addition, over 15 students worked as stage and light crew. Many parents also contributed time and efforts for this production.
Senior performers in this production that will soon be ending their careers with the Darlington Players include Erin Pridgen, in the role of Anna; Alex Murray, in the role of the King; and doomed lovers Christine Hom, as Tuptim, and Daniel Gray, as Lun Tha. “Erin dazzled us with her ethereal voice and her brilliant acting in her first major role in a production,” said Marisa Ortega, production director.
Ortega was assisted in direction of The King and I by Dan Bishop, choral director, and was supported by Diane Lumpkin, Lower School lead teacher; Kim Tunnell, Middle School chorus teacher; Bill King, music director; Mark Hoven, set design and construction; Georgie Hall, choreography; and Angela Flannigan, vocal trainer.
