Junior wins Book Cover Art Contest

Junior Melissa Lee was named winner of the McCallie-Kennedy Library’s Book Cover Art Contest for her original design representing Jody Picoult’s “Nineteen Minutes.” This contest is an annual event to help students celebrate the Upper School summer reading book.
“Melissa’s piece was selected because of the highly original design and color scheme, which suggest the enormous impact of the deaths on the protagonist,” said David Powell, academic dean.
As the winner, Lee’s work will be displayed permanently in the library for years to come. Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, she also received a $100 cash prize.
“I was really happy that I won first place,” said Lee, the daughter of Beom Gak Lee and Mi Hee Choi of Daejeon, Korea. “I had my fingers crossed, and my roommate kept telling me that I would get it. The face on my artwork is Peter Houghton, my favorite character in the book. I didn’t want the cover to be a scene from the book because that would be very cliché, so I chose Peter’s face instead. The reflection of the number 10 crosses to represent the 10 people he killed.”
Second place and a cash award of $30 went to junior Erin Wu, the daughter of Wei-Feng Wu and Shu-Fen Chien of Taoyuan, Taiwan. Third place and a cash award of $20 went to senior Jess Milner, the son of Gene and Nell Milner of Rome.
