Junior awarded scholarship to study abroad

Junior Schell Hufstetler was awarded a scholarship Monday, Jan. 17, for a three-week, all-expense-paid study abroad opportunity at International House in Madrid, Spain, during the summer of 2005. The $3,200 award is being funded by the Embassy of Spain.
“This was pure luck,” said Spanish teacher Jim Linos, who presented the scholarship. “My number was selected at the Embassy of Spain Luncheon at the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) conference in Chicago in November.”
According to Linos, Hufstetler is the first Darlington student to participate in the Spanish Language Program For High School Students.
“I selected Schell because she is a rising senior who has displayed an earnest will to acquire the language. She has consistently shown herself to be a mature and diligent student who has a desire to continue her study of the language next year at the Advanced Placement level,” said Linos. “This program is specifically geared toward preparation for the AP Spanish Language class she will take next year as a senior.”
Hufstetler, who plans to continue studying Spanish in college, said she is excited about the program.
“I hope to get a larger understanding of the world,” said Hufstetler. “I have been out of the country before, once to Moldova and once to Nicaragua. I’m looking forward to traveling again. This will be very different from the other trips, which were mission trips, and I’ve always had translators before. I think I’ll learn much more about the culture through this experience.”
The Spanish Language Program for High School Students in CEELE-accredited schools is organized by Eduespaña and sponsored by the Education Office of the Embassy of Spain in Washington, D.C. This program is aimed at U.S. and Canadian students aged 15 to 19 with an intermediate to advanced level of Spanish who wish to improve their skills in preparation to take the AP Spanish Language Exam.
Students will take practice versions of the exam in class, and will be encouraged to practice their communication skills through active class participation. Two sessions of the program are scheduled June 13 through July 1 and July 4 through 22. Each course consists of 60 class hours over three weeks. Classes are complemented by at least six extracurricular activities and two day trips. Full room and board with a Spanish host family is included.
