Johnson earns Junior Ranger badges

Last year, fourth-grader Chandler Johnson saw a news item that sparked her attention. A National Park Service Junior Ranger was congratulated by First Lady Laura Bush for visiting over 200 of the country’s 390 national park sites.
Johnson has since made it her goal to surpass this number, and has already toured nearly 90 of them.
Many national parks have Junior Ranger programs that encourage young people to learn about the park during their visit, according to Sarah Robinson, park ranger for Jimmy Carter National Historic Site. “Activity booklets are provided, and children, usually those up to age 12, are encouraged to complete their books to earn small prizes,” she said. “The most valued award is the Junior Ranger badge.”
Johnson was recently awarded a badge after completing a Junior Ranger booklet at Jimmy Carter National Historic Site.
“Chandler informed the park rangers that she would be taking her badge home and pinning it onto a Girl Scout sash containing all of her other Junior Ranger badges,” said Robinson. “I wouldn’t be surprised if she does, one day, become a ranger. She would make a great one.”
Johnson is the daughter of Dr. Jay and Carmen Johnson of Rome.
