Last month’s library time was jampacked with delightful stories both old and new.

Here’s the list of our favorite books from pre-K through first grade:

Pre-K Pick

"Cupcake," written and illustrated by Charise Mericle Harper, was the top choice for the Smith Smarties. If you are a fan of cupcakes, a little silliness and self-discovery, this book is for you. Cupcake is feeling a bit plain and boring when he compares himself to the other cupcakes, but with the help of a friend, discovers that he is in fact special. Make sure to check out the recipes at the end of the book!

Kindergarten's Favorite

The Deaton Darlings voted nearly unanimously on a new book, "Hotel Bruce" written and illustrated by Ryan T. Higgins. You might be familiar with "Mother Bruce," the first story about how Bruce the Bear’s life is changed by adopting four baby goslings. A slightly grumpy Bruce gives up winter hibernation for migration as he cares for his new family. In "Hotel Bruce," poor Bruce finds himself with a whole new set of surprises upon returning to his den post migration. How would you respond if your home had been turned into a hotel for numerous woodland animals while you were away? Read "Hotel Bruce" to find out how Bruce deals with this new challenge and how this gruff bear truly has a tender heart.

First Grade's First Choice

Horah’s Hoot Owls just completed the chapter book, "The World According to Humphrey" by Betty G. Birney and voted it their favorite. Humphrey is an intelligent and big-hearted classroom pet that teaches the boys and girls of Room 26 (along with several adults at the school) life changing lessons. As Humphrey says, “You can learn a lot about life by observing another species.” If you like adventure and friendship make sure to check out the 12 book series about Humphrey. Warning! Your child may ask for a new family pet.

Happy reading!
