A Commentary on Giving by John Graham ’59

Is it wrong to stop investing in education when your children and grandchildren have completed their education and are on their own? Absolutely. Each of us who are parents or grandparents have to look beyond our families when investing in education.

We have to think of the future. We have to think of investing in Darlington as being necessary to the welfare of our future. We are motivated to do so in recognition of what Darlington has provided for our children and grandchildren. We have to realize that Darlington provides an opportunity for future students to benefit the welfare of the free world.

Some call this investing “gifting.” If we think of the need for our dollars, as well as our talents, then I suggest “investing” is a better term. We can then seek to measure the return on our investment as we see the student “product” go out into the world better equipped to seek the greater good.

Are you fully invested in Darlington?
