I'm Not as Transparent as I Thought

A student recently asked me, “Mrs. Holmes, What do you do here at Darlington?” After I got over my initial shock and understood that this student was very sincere in his questioning, I realized that maybe my role as director of library services wasn’t as transparent as I believed it was. I immediately reeled off a whole list of tasks I am responsible for and duties that I fulfill on a regular basis and the student seemed satisfied with my answer as he left to go to another class. 

I wasn’t, though. I’ve reflected on his question again and again over the last few days and wondered how I can become more transparent for my patrons. Many of my responsibilities pull me into meetings that occur outside of the library. In addition, our library team is working to staff the Middle School Library this year, so our time is divided between our school divisions. 

I want you all (our wonderful library patrons) to know that if you don’t see me in the library just know that I’m in meetings vying for ways to make our library services more abundant and more beneficial for you. If you have great ideas, you need resources or you just need someone to talk to, please stop by. You are my number one priority. If I’m not in my office, please shoot me an e-mail and I’ll be quick to respond. This goes for parents and faculty members alike. A librarian’s number one responsibility is to meet the needs of her patrons and I’m here ready to serve!
