Hutchins plants more than knowledge

Jim Hutchins’ seventh and eighth grade science classes are getting down and dirty planting flowers by the Middle School flagpole. The seventh grade class is beginning a study on plants and the eighth grade class is learning about work, force, and power. “There is no better way to combine them and get some things done,” Hutchins said.
Hutchins suggested that the class develop a project that they could do together that involved plants. Several students proposed improving the area near the flagpole because it is a popular lunch spot.
Middle School principal Jim Van Es approved the project and funded part of the endeavor. Parents donated some plants and a friend of Hutchins is donating hosta to be planted later. So, while Hutchins is planting seeds of knowledge in the students’ minds, he and the students are planting a garden for everyone to enjoy.
