Humanities classes glean impressions of Paris

Humanities lessons came to life during an Upper School field trip to Atlanta’s High Museum of Art and the Atlanta Greek Orthodox Cathedral, on March 13. First, faculty members George Awsumb and Rob Davis ’85 took the group of 34 Humanities students to the massive cathedral where they received a tour by an assistant Greek Orthodox priest that included a brief introduction into the history of the Church. While they were there, the students were able to view the largest mosaic on a dome in the Western hemisphere.
At the end of the cathedral tour, the group gathered impressions of Paris at the High Museum of Art’s special exhibit, “Paris in the Age of Impressionism.” The more than 100 works were a pleasant surprise, according to Davis, “students expected to see famous impressionists’ paintings; they did, but they saw so much more.” The exhibit consisted of lesser-known works by well-known impressionists like Monet, Van Gogh, and Degas.” The exhibit also included an Eiffel Tower display that showed how the tower was constructed and included a unique collection of Eiffel Tower souvenirs. “We did not expect to see French souvenirs at an art museum. That portion of the exhibit was extremely fun,” Davis said. “It was a window into what is possibly typical French culture. This could be considered France’s equivalent to Americana –perhaps Francana.”
