Huffman Center develops into more than athletic facility

A year ago, predictions were that the then newly opened A.J. Huffman ’67 Memorial Athletic Center would enjoy a constant flow of activity. Those predictions have proven true beyond expectations.
The center stayed busy with athletic activities throughout the year and even hosted a new event, The Darlington Girls Invitational Basketball Tournament. This year, the State Dual Wrestling Tournament will be held in the Huffman Center.
And, camps made good use of the facility this summer. In addition to Camp Darlington, volleyball, wrestling, and boys and girls basketball camps have been housed there.
But, the Huffman Center is capable of hosting much more than just athletics, as the past year has proven. Darlington parents, board members, administrators, and students have made good use of the facility in a variety of ways: Booster Club meetings, a Rome Parents/Students dinner, the College Fair, administrators’ retreats, the Upper School Christmas Dance, the Middle School Spring Dance, and a rehearsal for using the facility as the rain location for commencement, for example.
The School also invited three major guests to present their programs to students in the center. Milton Creagh, nationally known drug education and prevention specialist, delivered his hard-hitting message about the negative impact of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs to Upper School parents and students Feb. 1. World-renowned pianist Bruce Levingston ’79, New York, performed a concert for parents and students which was also open to the public Feb. 22. And, Buzz Bissinger, one of the nation’s most honored and distinguished journalists and author, talked about his controversial book, Friday Night Lights, April 19, to students, faculty, parents, and alumni.
The community has put the facility to good use as well, most notably with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s Around Georgia 2002 concert June 25.
