Heritage Patio - A Living Reminder

Commemorating individuals who have made a gift to Darlington through their estate plan, the Heritage Patio was completed during spring vacation March 8-12. The patio is nestled into the west side of the chapel, creating an alcove. Four benches, the names of the 39 honorees cast in bronze, and a plaque stating the purpose of the Heritage Society and the intent of its members are all part of the landscape.
The patio was constructed to serve as a living reminder to students, faculty, and campus visitors that Darlington has been built as a result of philanthropy. In this way the current Heritage Society members hope to promote philanthropy for future generations.
The creation of this honorarium was taken from dream to reality in just six months. Proposed by the Planned Gifts Committee in January, the project was completely funded by two Darlington alumni, Bill DuPre ’51 and Roby Robinson ’58.
The Darlington connection continued, as Ed Watters ’83 of Watters & Chatham Landscape designed and landscaped the area. The commemorative bronze plaques were created by Griffin Foundry Sales Company, under the guidance of George Griffin ’68.
The Heritage Patio will be dedicated with a ceremony honoring the philanthropists of the past Friday, May 7. The closing words of the Heritage Society plaque describe the purpose of this event, and of the patio itself: “Our hope is that this tribute will motivate future generations of philanthropists to support Darlington School as it endeavors to stimulate, nurture, teach and advance: Wisdom more than Knowledge, Service beyond Self, Honor above Everything.”
