Henson named STAR Student

Brett Henson was named Darlington’s 2007 STAR Student during an assembly Monday, Feb. 26. The presentation was made by Al Hodge, CEO of the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce and local sponsor of the STAR program.
"I was quite surprised, excited and honored to be selected as Darlington's STAR Student," said Henson, the son of Wanda and David Henson of Elko, Nev. "I was very impressed with what Mr. Hodge had to say about major businesses in Rome and Floyd County, and was flattered to receive this award from the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce."
Henson selected Craig Schmidt, chairman of the history department, as his STAR teacher. "I selected Mr. Schmidt for putting wisdom more than knowledge, service beyond himself, and his honor as an educator above everything," said Henson. "Most nights, you can find Mr. Schmidt in either Cooper or Summerbell House helping tutor students and acting as their academic advocate. Personally, I am amazed that Mr. Schmidt can help students in all subjects. Most people would think a history teacher is unable to find the cross product of two vectors, but Mr. Schmidt certainly breaks that stereotype."
Henson is actively involved in student government as president of the House Senate and Discipline Committee. He is a letterman in cross country and is captain of Scholar Bowl and the Math Team. A prefect in Summerbell House, Henson has served as a governor’s page in North Carolina and a coaching assistant at summer tennis camp. He also works as a lab assistant for the science department and is a columnist for The Darlingtonian.
The PAGE Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program, in its 49th
year, is sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) Foundation, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Department of Education. Since its inception, the STAR program has honored more than 19,000 students and the teachers they have selected as having had the most influence on their academic achievement. Students are selected on the basis of their SAT scores and class standing/scholastic averages.
STAR begins each year in participating high schools throughout Georgia when the STAR Student is named and chooses a STAR teacher to share in this recognition. The students and their teachers are honored by their schools and receive special recognition in their communities from more than 200 statewide civic organizations and businesses that sponsor local programs. Students then compete for school system titles, and those winners compete for region honors. Darlington School is part of Region 1, which includes Heard, Carroll, Haralson, Paulding, Polk, Floyd, Bartow, Chattooga, Gordon, Murray, Whitfield, Catoosa, Walker and Dade counties.
