Hembree recognized for 100th win

Girls' basketball coach Josh Hembree was recognized for his 100th victory Friday night at the Huffman Center. While the victory came on Jan. 5 against Excel, he was honored after Friday's game versus Trion (which actually marked his 101st win).
In an interview with the Rome News-Tribune, Hembree said, “I’m very grateful and very blessed to be in a program where we have ladies to make the commitment to success, made the commitment to work hard everyday, and have went out and taken care of business and won 100 games in 5½ years.”
Hembree turned Darlington's basketball program around, and is on pace to win twice as many games in his first six seasons than were won in the previous six. During his first season in 2008, he led the Lady Tigers to 12 wins, which was 11 more than they had the season before he arrived.
Improvement has been impressive and constant ever since. Not only do the Lady Tigers continue to add to their win total, they also continue to advance further in the State tournament.
In Hembree's second season, 2009, he led the Lady Tigers to the second round of State. in 2011, the team had their first winning season since 2004 as they went 25-5 and advanced to the second round of State again.
Last season was the best in the history of the program, as the Lady Tigers won 27 games and advanced to the third round of the State tournament.
The team continues its season Tuesday night against Southwest Atlanta Christian, the No. 1-ranked team in Class A.
