Heart of Community donates AED

The Heart of Community Association recently donated an automated external defibrillator unit, AED, to the Darlington School Infirmary. The AED is a small machine designed to aid in the treatment of a heart attack. Two electrodes attached to the lower and upper areas of the patient’s chest administer an electric shock to the heart, hopefully restarting the normal beating process. The unit will be located at the Huffman Center during sporting events, in case of emergencies.
“I’m thrilled to have it,” Renate Starr, Darlington nurse, said. Starr has felt the need for an AED unit for quite some time, and was excited at the prospect of finally receiving one. The machine will be a reassurance to students, parents, and grandparents that in case of a heart attack or collapse from heat exhaustion, immediate medical attention will be administered. Starr and several other Upper School faculty members received training from Redmond Regional Medical Center. Faculty members trained in the use of the machine are Gordon Neville, Casey Zimmer, Fran Buice, and Jerry Sharp.
