Groups receive superior ratings at Music USA Festival

Darlington’s Middle School Orchestra and Chorus traveled to Orlando, Fla., March 29 to April 1 to take part in the Music USA Festival at Universal Studios, where both groups received first place and Superior ratings.
Additionally, the Chorus was named Grand Champion over all choral groups participating, and Chandler Holcombe was named Outstanding Soloist.
At the festival, the Chorus performed Wagner’s “Bless Us With Your Love,” John Carter’s “Cantate Domino,” and Emerson’s “Sinner Man” and “Blue Skies,” which featured eighth-grade soloists Issac Nichols and Holcombe. The Orchestra performed Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” and Mozart’s “Overture to the Magic Flute.” Both groups were judged by instrumentalists and choral professors from around the state of Florida.
While in Orlando, students also got to visit Busch Gardens, Islands of Adventure and Sea World.
“I was most impressed by our students’ ability to perform well despite being exhausted from the theme parks and long bus rides,” said Will Camp, instrumental director. “Each year it seems as though our young performers are taking themselves more and more seriously. The Orchestra is really starting to glow with pride and students are taking ownership. I am pleased to see them striving for excellence.”
Both groups will perform concerts this spring. See the Chorus April 29 at 4 p.m. and the Orchestra May 7 at 7:30 p.m., both in Morris Chapel.
