Golf team swing into solid start

The golf team is 6-0 going into tournament competition against strong opponents including Calhoun, Carrollton, and Dalton high schools.
Team members Tilman Raybon and Tom Arnold, junior Andy Gates, sophomore Pat Patton, and freshmen David Hoyt, Drew Davis, Ben Burch, and Sanders Wallis have all scored in matches and have contributed to the team’s victories over Rome Cedartown, Coosa, Chattooga, Pepperell, and Rockmart high schools. Also practicing every day and ready for their chance to contribute to the team’s success are Sean Watford, senior, Jordan Hammond, junior, and freshman Carter Vick.
Freshman David Hoyt attributes much of the team’s success to the evenly balanced skills of the team members. “This season has been so successful because the team is so closely talented that we all challenge each other in order to see who will finish first in each match,” Hoyt said.
According to Raymond Murray, head golf coach, their major challenge will be at the big tournaments in Calhoun and Carrollton where the tigers will be playing against teams with outstanding golf records like Dalton High School. “This will allow us to get an idea of where we stand in relation to the top teams in the state. There aren’t any other schools in our county that have as many quality golfers ready and anxious to play in matches,” Murray explained. “Our golfers know that and focus on that every day. We are not going up to the regional championship at Fields Ferry in Calhoun to come in second place because we certainly plan on winning.”
Pat Patton, the single sophomore on the team echoed Murray’s belief,” We know what we have got to do to get to state and we are trying to achieve that goal by practicing every day and playing hard in every match we have.”
