Golf Team Dominates

The Middle School golf team completed the season 14-1, with a win over St. Mary’s School on May 11 at Coosa Country Club. Eighth-grader Sanders Wallis posted the best individual score with a 44. Eighth-grader Drew Davis followed closely with a 46.
The best score posted by any team member this season was a one-under-par 35 by eighth-grader David Hoyt.
The team’s lone loss came in a very close match with Dalton Middle School during a rain-shortened event in Dalton.
The highlight of the season was the Tigers’ victory in the inaugural Darlington Classic Golf Tournament April 10 at Cedartown’s Cherokee Country Club. There, they defeated Calhoun, Cedartown, Westminster, and St. Mary’s. In a field of 36 golfers, seventh-grader Patrick McShane took individual honors with a 2-over-par 38. Hoyt finished in second place while Davis and sixth-grader Ryan Naegel tied for fourth.
“This is the best team that we’ve had since I began coaching golf four years ago,” said Middle School Golf Coach Doug Moon. “Our strength was that we had so many talented golfers that if one of them had a bad day, someone else would come along with a great score. We had 16 golfers on our team this year, and all of them helped in one way or another at some time during the season.”
Although eight members of the team will be moving to the Upper School, Moon is excited about the 2001 season: “Patrick and Ryan will be returning next year, and we have a lot of very good younger players that were able to get some valuable experience this year,” Moon said. “I know that our golfers will be working hard on their game during the off-season, so that we will continue our winning tradition next season.”
