Glorious Hill, Miss., Comes Alive in Tennessee Williams Play

The Darlington Players presented its spring production, an adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ Summer and Smoke, April 22-25, in the Zelle Fine Arts Center. Marisa Ortega, Upper School English teacher, directed Williams’ chronicle of the doomed love story of a puritanical minister’s daughter and the not-so-puritanical doctor’s son in Glorious Hill, Miss., at the turn of the century.
“The success of the play is due to the hard work and dedication of many individuals,” Ortega said. “The students in the cast and crew have so impressed me with the insight and focus that they have given to this very mature work. Both in creating Glorious Hill and in developing these characters and their complex relationships, I am in awe of the world they inhabit on the stage.”
Cast members included Spencer Warren as Reverend Winemiller; Mary Binns as Mrs. Winemiller; Drew Doss as John Buchanan Jr.; Emily Conrad as Alma Winemiller; Susan Ritacca as Rosa Gonzales; Stephanie Bowen as Nellie Ewell; Charles Conner as Roger Doremus; Hank Johnson as Dr. Buchanan Sr.; Acquania Gibbs as Mrs. Bassett; David Fulmer as Vernon; Alison Taylor as Rosemary; Jeremy Martin as Dusty; Peter Garcia-Sjogrim as Gonzales; KC Sampsell as Archie Kramer; Chris Jackson as Young John; and Allison Black as Young Alma.
Crew members included Shelby Sams, Tom Algai, Jordano Williams, and Natalie Boyd. Rehearsal assistants were Marie Hodge and John-Michael Boling. Morgan McCrary helped with research.
Art teacher Kathy O'Mara and Thatcher Chair of English David Powell designed and constructed the set. The Fine Arts Booster Club assisted with furniture and props for the show.
