Girls Track Dominates; Boys Show Promise

Darlington’s girls track team is vying again for a state title, while the boys’ chances diminished due to injuries.
In the ninth annual Darlington/Rome News-Tribune Invitational Saturday, April 17, the Darlington girls placed second (66 points) of 19 teams behind Woodward (107). Ana Monroe Fitzner ran her fastest time of the season in the 1600 meter (5:26.03) and the 800 (2:28.67), taking first place in both events. Beth Mooney took first in the long jump with a distance of 15 feet, 10 inches.
Claire Goldfaden broke the school record in the triple jump with a distance of 33 feet, 11 inches, but finished second in the event. She also came in sixth in the 200. Other girls who placed for the Tigers are Lindsey Harbin (second in the 3200), Mary Foss (second in the 100 hurdles and fifth in the 300 hurdles), and Jordan Bray (fourth in the 800).
The boys finished 12th of 22 teams, with 15 points. David Swift and Will Cunningham placed second and third in the pole vault. Vann Knight finished sixth in the 300 hurdles.
The girls won the Floyd County Invitational March 30, while the boys came in second. Chris Presley broke the school record in the 200 meter run with a time of 22.16.
The injuries of two key boys, Brad Garver and Sean Atkins, will make it difficult to improve upon last year’s second place finish in the Class A state championships.
Region meets will be Tuesday, April 27 (boys) and Tuesday, May 4 (girls). The state meets are March 7-8 (boys) and March 13-15 (girls).
