Girls soccer ends season with impressive record

Girls varsity soccer ended the season with an impressive 14/4/1 record –with three of their losses against teams ranked in the top 10. The tigers dominated region play with a record of 10-0 and outscored region opponents 77-0. The team broke many records during the season, including scoring the most goals ever for a Darlington girls team with 109 total goals. Rachel Wiggins broke the career scoring record with 132 goals in her four years, and she also broke the record for most goals in one season with 44.
One of the team's best performances of the season came against local foe Rome High, with the tigers coming out on top 7-3. The first half was dominated by the tigers as they jumped out to a 6-1 lead on four goals by Wiggins and one each by Emily Brock and E.B. Connelly. Wiggins added her fifth goal of the game in the second half. Another top performance for the tigers came against Pace Academy, who was ranked number one in the state at the time the game was played. The defense, led by Sweeper Lauren Wetherington, Stopper Mimi Sumner, and outside fullbacks Ellen Collier and Ann Elise Winn stepped up and held Pace out of net for most of the game and kept the score at 1-1 until 20 minutes left. Pace broke loose and the game ended up 4-2, with Wiggins scoring both of the goals for the tigers. Goalie Kristin Kountz made save after amazing save and came up with one of her best games ever.
The tigers lost 4-3 in the first round of the state playoffs in overtime to Aquinas. It was an exciting game that was well played by both teams. Wiggins scored the first two goals, and the tigers trailed 3-2 at the half. Bethany Blevins tied it up 3-3 with a goal in the second half, but Aquinas scored in the first overtime for the win. Baldwin Harris, Rachel Fronzak, Laura McCord, and Erin Euler were especially good in the midfield, passing the ball extremely well to set things up all game.
The leading scorers for the year were Wiggins with 44 goals, Brock with 29, Connelly with 16 and Blevins with 10. "The effort the girls gave was unbelievable and the skill level at which we played during the state game was very high,” coach Kevin Ivester said. “I couldn't be more proud of how we played that game and all that we accomplished this season. I thought we had a great, great season and I enjoyed it very much.”

The defense consisted of Anna Lee Williams, Casey Jakob, and Alex Palmour along with Collier, Wetherington, Winn, Sumner, Fronzak and goalie Kountz. Connelly, Brock and Blevins attacked up front as the forwards.
